The Food Safety Modernization Act [FSMA] enacted January 2011 is designed to prevent contamination of human and animal food. In addition to extensive sanitation protocols, it reinforces the need for adherence to the FDA standards for lubricants used in food processing equipment.
The use of Food Grade equipment lubricants now extends, as well, to the processing of products for the pharmaceutical, personal care and other industries which demand a higher standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
Avatar Corporation offers a complete line of food grade lubricants and release agents which comply with National Sanitation Foundation International [NSF] rules for appropriate use, ingredient and labeling review and U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] regulatory requirements including FDA 21 CFR for use in federally-inspected meat and poultry plants.
NSF Food Grade Categories and Definitions
H1 - Incidental Contact Lubricants – Compounds intended for use in and around food processing areas. Such compounds may be used on food processing equipment as a protective anti-rust film, as a release agent on gaskets or seals of tank closures and as a lubricant for machine parts and equipment in locations in which there is a potential exposure of the lubricated part to food. The amount used should be the minimum required to accomplish the desired technical effect on the equipment. If used as an anti-rust film, the compound must be removed from the equipment surface by washing or wiping, as required to leave the surface effectively free of any substance which could be transferred to food being processed.
3H - Direct Contact Release agents – Compounds acceptable for use on grills, ovens, loaf pans, boning benches, chopping boards or other hard surfaces in contact with meat and poultry food products to prevent food from adhering during processing.
HT1 - Incidental Contact Heat Transfer Fluids – Compounds acceptable for use where there is possibility of incidental food contact and for use in the immersion or spray freezing of wrapped meat and packaged poultry products. The amount used should be the minimum required to accomplish the desired effect.
